- Thousand-year-old eggs are normal duck eggs treated for a hundred days in a mixture of lime, ash, salt, and tea. It's a pretty rough treatment. They ferment, and taste a bit like cheese. The lime and ash stain and pit the shell. They can look like stone and the name suggests fossilization. But in actuality... they are quite fragile.
